What Is Actually Holding Your Door Up
The opener is not what lifts a garage door. The springs do almost all of the work, and the motor simply guides a door that the springs have already made close to weightless. That is the single most useful thing to understand about the system over your head, because it explains why a door that suddenly feels impossibly heavy is a spring problem and not an opener problem.
There are two arrangements in common use. A torsion system sits on a steel shaft above the opening; the springs wind and unwind around that shaft, and cables running to the bottom of the door do the lifting. An extension system uses long springs stretched along the horizontal tracks on either side, pulling as the door comes down.
Why They Are Not Interchangeable
Fitting one type where the other lives is not a straight swap. Torsion hardware needs headroom above the opening for the shaft, bearing plates and drums. Extension springs need clear length alongside the tracks and, done properly, safety containment cables running through them so a broken spring cannot travel across the garage.
Older garages in south Scottsdale sometimes have limited headroom, and that is where the choice stops being a matter of preference. A conversion is an installation decision with measurements behind it, so ask what problem it solves at your garage rather than accepting it as a general upgrade.
What a Replacement Has to Match
A spring is specified to the door it serves. Wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction all follow from the door's weight, its height and the drum and track arrangement already installed. Two coils that look identical from the driveway can be rated very differently.
Get it wrong one way and the door is heavy at the floor. Get it wrong the other and it floats, will not stay down and the opener fights it closed. That is why a technician measures rather than matching by eye.
Signs a Spring Has Given Up
The classic version is a bang loud enough to be heard inside the house, usually as the door is closing, followed by a door that will only lift a few inches before the opener strains and stops. Look, from a safe distance, for a clear gap in one of the coils on the shaft, or for a spring alongside the track that now hangs slack.
Quieter versions exist: a door lifting crookedly, cables gone loose on one side, or an opener straining where it used to run easily. Stop using the door when you see any of these, because every extra cycle loads the opener, the cables and the track beyond what they were designed for.
How Long Springs Last Here
Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, and one cycle is one full open and close. In most Scottsdale homes the garage is the door everybody actually uses, so a household with two drivers can put four, six or more cycles through it every day. That adds up far faster than the calendar suggests.
Heat plays its part too. A closed garage in midsummer sits well above the outside temperature for hours, which is hard on the coils and the bearings they run in. Higher-cycle springs are a fair thing to ask about on a heavily used door; ask for the product rating rather than a promise.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
Very little, and that is the honest answer. Never try to release, adjust or replace a spring. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and the tools and technique for controlling it are not something to improvise with a bar from the shed.
What you can do is observe and describe: whether the door is open, closed or stopped part way, whether you heard a bang, and whether a cable is slack or a coil has a visible gap. Then keep everyone clear, leave the opener switched off and let a technician take it from there.

If your door has stopped lifting, leave it alone and have it looked at.
